Mission & History

Using a research- and community-informed approach, we advocate for effective, long-lasting solutions that break down barriers to success for children and families.

Mission

Kids Forward is a statewide antiracist policy center that inspires action and advocates for children and families of color and those furthest from opportunity in Wisconsin. We envision a Wisconsin where every child thrives.

Compassion

We seek to understand the life situations of every child and family, and act out of a deep concern for those further from opportunity.

Equity

We work to build the best future possible for every child and every family in Wisconsin—especially for children and families of color and those furthest from opportunity.

Inquiry

We use sound data, listen to diverse voices, respect the expertise that resides within each community, and share what we learn.

Accountability

We live our values internally, as we stand up for every kid and family.

History

Kids Forward was established in 1881 as the Wisconsin Conference on Charities and Corrections, and is the oldest multi-issue child and family advocacy organization in the country. For well over a century, the organization has focused on improving conditions for families and children through policy change, expanded public investments, and public education that lead to improvements in outcomes and practices in the delivery of publicly funded health care, education, workforce development, and social services.

Kids Forward is a private, non-profit, non-partisan statewide organization. We operate under the strategic guidance of a statewide board of directors made up of representatives of schools, business, local government, health care, the faith community, the judiciary, and social service organizations.
